In this fast paced type of social media culture are we single or double minded?
Jesus says:“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money (Matt 6:24).” This is followed by Jesus’ brother James saying: “But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways (James 1:6-8).”
What did I learn this last weekend in Las Vegas watching eight year old grandson Kieran compete in a regional gymnastics tournament? The importance of being single minded. To see the focus and single mindedess of this young athlete was spiritually energizing.
Like a young athlete be single focused. Be single minded about Jesus Christ. He is worthy of our focus and following! Oh by the way, Kieran placed third in his age division.
Sunday’s Theme: Like a Great M & M, we can be disciple makers for Jesus Christ.
Prayer fellowship meets after worship! Pastor John
God speaks to you all the time. Are you aware, even when you are sleeping that God’s got a word for you? Try this idea on for size: God never sleeps. God speaks to you even through your dreams.
Joseph raised in a religious family, found himself a slave in Egypt. Yet even through his suffering what we all would call ‘bad hair days (bad circumstances) his life dramatically changed for the good. How? Through God helping him to interpret dreams. He discovered that God wanted good circumstances for him as he reached out to help others! In his chasing God he found God’s dream chasing HIM.
Like Joseph chase God and chase the dream that’s chasing you. See how the God of the universe will so come into your life that God will transform your bad hair day into a wonderful rainbow of blessing. Be able to say like Joseph to whoever or whatever that ails you: “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives (Genesis 50:20).”
Carol Ewing is speaking Sunday, while Maureen and I are seeing a grandson chase God’s dream to one day be an olympic gymnast. Pastor John
Years ago while wanting to get something ready for a church potluck, I whipped together a devil’s food cake, with fudge frosting. I looked in the pantry and there was this cherry pie filling. Without much thought I thought oh gee, let’s try the cherries on top. It was a hit. What makes this cake supreme is how the filling seeps into the cake.
Come on down to the Soul Cafe tomorrow between 1:30 and 5 and get a free piece of the cake and coffee. Consider it an appetizer to your dinner tomorrow on Valentines’s Day.
Besides- I don’t give the Devil credit for great chocolate cake! Ha! Take a break on Valentine’s Day! Pastor John
Snow is spiritual. Each snow flake is unlike any other. Like snowflakes we are unique, only one of a kind. Snow also carries either blessing or danger; like each human being. So I ask: is any body ‘snowed’ ?
Snowed in the sense that you are taken advantage of, or exploited, or tricked into believing something only to realize that someone has pulled the rug out from beneath you financially. Someone sweet talks you only to realize later they meant you harm verbally or physically.
So like I believe Jesus meant: “Be as wise as a serpent and as harmless as a dove (Matthew 10:16).” In other words be open and gentle with people; but if necessary use your street and spirit smarts to be wise enough not to get hurt or to hurt others.
Sunday we finish up the theme at 9:30 am-“What Happens After You Die? ” and at worship we meditate upon God’s idea: “I love you.” What does this really mean?
Stay safe, stay warm-don’t get “snowed”. Your fellow travelers down the road of life following The Holy Spirit.” John and Maureen!
The wisest investments are where? In the bank, credit union, or with your stock broker? No, the wisest investments are the time you or I spend meeting and getting to know new people: new relationships. New people who we invest ourselves in always end up blessing us!
Like Jesus, do you enjoy people? Even people who are different than you and me? Nothing is more interesting or frustrating then people. Yet our souls are energized, our minds inspired, and our hearts warmed as we develop long lasting relationships with others. How many long lasting friendships have you maintained with others, other than your biological family members?
Jesus, in thinking of people- said:”For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also (Matthew 6:21).”
So on this Superbowl weekend-let’s mix with people-invite them over to your place-to chat and watch the football game! Jesus will be at the Super Bowl mixing with people. Why shouldn’t you and I do the same?
Sunday morning at 9:30 we continue our review what the Bible tells us happens once we die. Following worship Prayer fellowship happens!
